WHAT IS LOW SELF ESTEEM?

The way you view yourself, your abilities, your positive and negative qualities and the future make up your self esteem.  When we talk about Low Self Esteem we are referring to a set of unhelpful beliefs that we may hold about ourselves that can interfere with the way we live our lives.

For example, you may find that you approach certain or many aspects of your life differently because of how you feel about yourself.  It might be that career and family decisions are heavily influenced by how you make sense of your capabilities.  Often we may avoid certain situations or even making decisions due to a fear that we are not good enough.

WHAT TREATMENTS IMPROVE SELF ESTEEM?

Low self esteem isn’t classified as a psychological disorder – but rather can be viewed as a collection of beliefs that are unhelpful to you.  It is certainly true that without treatment Low Self Esteem can leave us vulnerable to problems such as depression or anxiety issues.

There are some good self help books and websites that can help you explore self esteem – and we would be happy to recommend some of these to you after discussing how self esteem affects you.  More often it may be helpful to consider a course of psychological therapy in order to generate more detailed ideas.  Cognitive Behavioural Therapy has been shown to be effective in looking at thoughts and behaviours that keep self esteem problems going – and also exploring how it came about in the first place.  Both of these approaches can help you improve your esteem and reduce the chances of problems in the future.
