Panic attacks can often be caused by the fear that something bad is going to happen imminently within one’s own body or mind. Often physical sensations in the body such as sweating, palpitations or difficulty catching breath might be triggered by certain situations – or even ‘come out of the blue.’   When it seems like these could be dangerous and we feel particularly heightened anxiety, we might be experiencing a ‘panic attack.’

Panic attacks can be either frequent, or less frequent and are sometimes part of a wider picture – for example depression or other types of anxiety problems.

This psychological approach to treating panic attacks is preferred by the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence and it is recommended as a first treatment of choice for panic.  It has been shown that CBT for panic is also for more effective than medication.
