WHAT IS ANXIETY?
Anxiety is a type of emotion or mood. In fact it is perfectly normal for all of us to experience anxiety in our lives – in many situations an amount of anxiety can be helpful. At times however anxiety can become overwhelming and cause problems in day to day life. If this is the case it may be helpful to seek treatment.
There are different types of anxiety problems and disorders, for example:
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- Health Anxiety
- Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and Worry
HOW DOES IT DEVELOP?
If you are experiencing anxiety it is important to realise that this is not unusual – in fact anxiety problems are one of the main reasons people seek psychological therapy. The causes and areas that maintain an anxiety difficulties vary depending on the exact problem area. For example research shows that in Generalised Anxiety Disorder feelings of anxiety are likely to be maintained by a process of worrying about a wide range of life areas. Whereas in Panic Disorder anxiety tends to be maintained by a perception that a particularly threatening physical event is happening in the body.
Your therapist will work with you to identify areas that might make you vulnerable to anxiety problems, areas that trigger them and crucially ways to prevent anxiety difficulties being maintained.
WHAT TREATMENTS ARE RECOMMENDED FOR ANXIETY PROBLEMS?
Treatments for anxiety vary depending on how anxiety affects you. For most anxiety problems either an evidence-based talking therapy like CBT or medication will be recommended. For some types of anxiety problem it may be advised that you consider a combination of both in order to achieve results.
