WHAT IS PANIC AND PANIC ATTACKS?

Panic Disorder is a type of anxiety disorder that occurs when panic attacks occur frequently for someone and are accompanied by a strong fear and worry about these between panic episodes.

Although people’s experiences of panic attacks can be individual and specific to them, there are common similarities that define a panic attack more generally – most notably fear and anxiety fueled by a belief that something imminently catastrophic is happening either physically in the body or mind.

Commonly people may report that when a panic episode is occurring they will notice a range of physical changes in the body such as an increased heart rate, sweating, palpitations or unexplained pains which are interpreted as immediately dangerous, for example that a heart attack or stroke is happening.  When these experiences occur regularly with no obvious physical cause it may be that panic is occurring.

HOW DOES IT DEVELOP?

In some cases panic disorder may occur at the same time or as part of another problem – for example Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or Generalised Anxiety Disorder.  In these cases a therapist or psychologist will work with you to identify where it is likely to be most helpful to focus treatment initially.  In other cases it may be that someone has gone through particular life events that have made them vulnerable to panic episodes.

WHAT TREATMENTS ARE RECOMMENDED FOR PANIC?

Research suggests that Cognitive Behavioural Therapy produces a significant treatment benefit for panicdisorder and is a first line recommendation by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).  Certain types of medications may also be recommended for panic (such as specific antidepressant medications) although these are not as highly recommended as a psychological approach such as CBT.
