It is normal to feel Anxiety or Shyness in some social situations. However if you are finding that this happens all the time or is holding you back then contact us on 0800 0614548 to find out how our therapy for Social Anxiety can help you.

WHAT ARE SOCIAL ANXIETY, SOCIAL PHOBIA & SHYNESS?

It is normal to feel anxiety in some social situations – for example when starting a new job or preparing for an important meeting.  If you notice that this happens very frequently or has a negative impact on your life then you may benefit from treatment to help you reduce and manage anxiety and shyness.

Some people notice that they suffer from social anxiety (sometimes called Social Phobia) around certain people, groups of people or situations, whilst others describe feeling anxious all the time when they are around people– either in conversation or at a distance.  Often people will have a range of concerns about how they come across to other people – for example that they look nervous, may get something wrong or may be perceived as boring.  Whilst there are many different types of concerns that people can have, the common theme with social anxiety and shyness is that they may be judged negatively.

One result of these concerns is people can change the way they act in social situations – for example talking less to others or doing certain things to help  ‘look normal’ and ‘not anxious’.  Often these behaviours can actually make the situation worse – and that whilst they are logical they certainly dont help.

One key aspect to social anxiety is how our body feels in certain situations – for example, we may notice physical changes such as becoming shaky, blushing or stuttering.  Often we notice these very quickly and our attention can focus on these – often actually making them worse.

WHAT TREATMENTS ARE RECOMMENDED FOR SOCIAL ANXIETY & SHYNESS?

Whilst they may sometimes be prescribed, medications are not generally recommended as a first choice of treatment for Social Anxiety and Shyness problems although in some cases a combination of certain antidepressants and talking therapy may be advisable.

There is a strong amount of research that suggests Cognitive Behavioural Therapy can produce quick treatment benefits and lead to longer lasting gains after treatment ends.  CBT for Social Anxiety helps you to understand how your thoughts, attention and ways of coping in a social situation may raise or lower your anxiety.  At Dynamic You we can offer you individual treatment, quickly – with courses of therapy usually lasting around 8-16 sessions.
